Hunt Downer facilitated the donation of the late Gov. Richard Leche’s chair to the Old Governor’s Mansion and he made it official at the Foundation for Historical Louisiana’s recent preservation awards dinner.

The chair, which bears a plaque to FHL from Leche’s two sons, will take its position behind Huey P. Long’s desk at the Old Governor’s Mansion museum.

Honored at the 31st annual Preservation Awards dinner July 19 were Judy Riffel, for her knowledge and volunteerism in genealogy; Elisabeth “Libby” Dart, for a lifetime of service to preserving the heritage of West Baton Rouge Parish; Johnny Palazzotto, for serving as an ambassador of Louisiana’s musical heritage; and Mary Ann Sternberg, for her work as a researcher, author, historian and spokeswoman for River Road and Bayou Manchac.

The event also recognized four individuals with “Bricks & Mortar” awards, including Camm Morton, Commercial Properties Development Trust principal, for restoring Hotel Heidelberg and Capitol House; Rich Major, Providence Engineering principal, for renovating 1201 Main St. Norm and Sand Marmillion received a Phoenix Award for their courage and determination in restoring Laura Plantation for a second time after the plantation was heavily damaged in a 2004 fire.
