Originally scheduled for back in September, the effects of Gustav forced the Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition to regroup, reorganize and reschedule their major event for Friday, December 5, 2008 at Boudreaux's.  Community leaders from around Baton Rouge came together to help further the literacy cause for the area.

As guests enjoyed their breakfast, an inspiring and educational video aired allowing the breakfast attendees insight into the literacy problem in our area, the causes and the hopeful plans for a solution.  Following the video two student speakers shared their stories of illiteracy and how through community efforts they were able to write and read their stories in front of the audience there in attendance.  Several other community leaders, including Mayor Kip Holden, got up to share their plans of action and visions for literacy in and around our community.

As the event came to its conclusion we were reminded that even though we are making great strides for literacy in Baton Rouge, we are faced daily with 28% illiteracy rate that as a community affects us all.  The hope for improvement lies within the capable hands of those in attendance as well as those that work with them at the various agencies.  For more information about the coalition and it's mission, please visit www.gbrliteracy.org.
